Marketing as we know it

I am sitting here reading pages of “new wave” marketing material for my marketing publishing class in my flat and just had this random idea … what if the people simply just “took away” the consumer market?

If more people started to consume less and/or turn to alternative lifestyles and buy recycled clothing and other products (or grow their own products), how will marketers be able to execute their plans? I am sure they are counting on that number staying low, of course, but just a random thought … I’ll assume that they’ll always count on that percentage remaining fairly low, but it sure would mess with capitalism if the people of the world decided they owned enough products and took enough vacations.
